I'm not sure if this is possible, but I'm hoping someone might know what sort of oak these acorns might have come from. The oaks in the woods near us have not even started dropping their acorns yet... and theirs are more oval shaped, not as round as these. No caps, unfortunately. I went through my 'Trees in Britain' book by Roger Phillips, but couldn't find a match. The largest is 2cm across. Acorns Aug 2020 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

Don't suppose you took photos of the leaves of the tree these were from? Otherwise think it's unlikely you'll get a definitive answer.

They were a gift from our jays, Aeshna!
Snowlynx found them on their birdtable yesterday, so I was curious as to where the birds were able to find them. Perhaps it's their way of saying 'thanks for all those monkey nuts."
