I sincerely hope the following doesn’t put members off your next meal but for one who studies bird behaviour amongst other things I find it very interesting indeed. AS you know I been observing our neighbours, and no it’s not the interesting couple who do stage some very interesting antics at times but our nesting pair of Dunnocks. Now this particular pair have been partaking of a polygamous relationship, in this particular example one female and two males although they can have more than this, incidentally I’m referring to the Dunnocks here and not our neighbours although they may well be since one never knows do one. Nonetheless, my wife and I were very happy to see three of their new brood hopping around the garden, but Dunnocks being Dunnocks it wasn’t very long before cloaca pecking was carried out in order to stimulate the female into ejecting sperm from the previous male to ensure only his progeny are produced. However, male Dunnock number two is often subordinate too and will not be allowed to help feed the young although this particular example is doing just that. Alan
