I've never filled a narrow (3" to 4") gap between my house wall and patio and each summer several ant colonies start in the gap. Yestergay by my patio door a saw a blackbird (♀) hop into the gap at one of the ant nest sites and I could not really see what was going on down there (but too tight for the bird to open its wings.
Do blackbirds eat ants or would it more likely be "anting"? Without knowing I'd have thought ants distasteful and a bit small (particularly after our recent rain bringing up worms, and plenty of larger bugs to feed on) - but that's a complete guess.

I don't know about blackbirds eating ants but recently we have seen house sparrows eating ants outside the back door.

I've just seen blackbirds gathering by the ants outside the window...I've also noticed sparrows there. Moreover, I've seen a house sparrow following a blackbird around the garden recently and feeding beside it...maybe the sparrow thinks the blackbird will find the best feeding sites?!

The sparrows do it all the time here I think it's a case of FOMO 'fear of missing out' ian
