Yes it is and a great looking one too.
Well captured, a few cm closer or further away and it would have passed unseen.

Am I right in thinking that it would be a Barred grass snake Natrix helvetica (as I assume Natrix natrix (or Natrix natrix natrix) is not a UK species - given the recent creation of Natrix helvetica as a separate species - all of which happened long after my reptile book was published in 1978).

Yes the UK Grass Snakes have now been reclassified as N. helvetica.
