My first thought due to the the very white looking body was a Little Egret as they are not uncommon - I saw one last week on the river Roding close to Wanstead. However, even though the underside of the wings are against a bright sky, I think they would show up much whiter than in your shot. This and also the bowed shape of the wings suggests, as Nige has said, a Grey Heron.

Something has gone a little AWOL. Faz's photo was there earlier today - around 1pm, but has since disappeared.
