Bit of a swelterer innit? The last batch of live mealworms from our usual supplier which had been superb up 'till now (no names, no pack drill) were turning dark brown to black within hours of installing them in their sumptuous quarters. Emailed our supplier and a fresh batch on its way. Very good service.
Arrived today and up to their usual high standard.
Cheers, Tony.

I've never ordered live mealworms, but I do now and again get live waxworms for the jays. I think they welcome a change from the peanuts, but I certainly couldn't afford to do it very often!

I get live mealworms from here - www.livefoodsdirect.co.uk/Category/Mealworms - and I recommend them. The last order I had took a little longer than normal(usually they are delivered within a couple of days) but they were in good condition when they arrived. I assume the company might have had a few problems due to COVID19. They do disappear too quickly to get them frequently, once the blackbirds and especially magpies spot them they do not last very long. Dave

I seem to remember reading somewhere it's quite easy to "grow your own" mealworms, and they will eat polystyrene. I nearly gave it a go but got distracted by something

I have tried and succeeded at breeding my own mealworms. Bit of a bother but we got there. I've tried waxworms but without success.
This is from where I get my mealworms,

Back in my zookeeper days I seem to remember others (caring for species fed mealworms) had to be careful as too many mealworms could cause constipation so they'd switch to waxworms periodically (to avoid those problems). I tended to care for animals that wouldn't even notice if they trod on a mealworm so this is 2nd hand info and I can't remember which species those issues affected. Ian
