I am sure you all know this but it is the first time I have actually seen it or been aware of them. There were hundreds of very small squashed up leaves strewn around the borders, around the Beech trees, in the gravel and over the lawns. I was made to feel foolish when I asked someone what they were, as if I should have know they were Beech seedlings. So here you are a Beech seedling leading to the birth of a Beech:) Beech seeding April 2020 1 by Helen Skelton, on Flickr

That should keep your jays happy- they are supposed to love beech mast!
Whenever we've gone walking where there are beech trees I bring some of the seeds back to put on their bird table. They always take it away... not sure if they actually eat it, or just bury it.
