I think it is a Cranefly. Which one of the three hundred in Britain it is I'm not sure. It could be one of the Nephrotoma.

Thanks for the tips. When I took the picture I thought ID would be easy given the red rear.

I've just Googled "nephrotoma" and can see a lot of similar specimens with common characteristics. Body shape and distinctly coloured rear being noticeable. Harold's observation appears to be accurate in my inexpert view.
