This plant first appeared in the garden last year. It died down in the winter and has grown again in the same place this year.
It is in a border but the soil is thin and poor with a number of other large plants growing near by - Euonymus, Jasmine and Ivy.
The plant is now about 1.5m tall but last year grew to about 1.8m
I've tried to find it online and the nearest I can get is some kind of sowthistle but I'm not sure and this has flowers earlier than online suggests.
Thanks
Dave

It is Smooth Sow-thistle. Many plants flower earlier than the books say these days. some plants like this may even be found flowering in the winter.
These usually behave as annuals but may last a bit longer. Maybe not the most desirable of garden plants but insects still like the flowers & Goldfinches the seeds. Easy to pull up if you don't like it.

Thanks, Aeshna. It would be good if the goldfinches fed on the seeds but I think they might be put off by the plant being very close the house.

You could pull out the seeds once they appear and put them in a feeder to see if they'll take them.
When we came across some teasels a few years ago when out walking I cut and brought back a few... attached them to the brackets holding the nyger seed feeders with garden wire and the goldfinches really enjoyed them!
