Not so much backing up data.. More of storing images. Have disks going back to 2010. Did use an external hard drive for a few years. Then the inevitable happened... The drive failed and did not work at all. Using a Windows 7 that is spare and transferring images to there as well as saving disks. Some images are now backed up using Google. Also have a lot on Picasso.. Might be safe now.

I no longer use spiral bound notebooks in the field, too easy for the pages to be removed or fall out. I now write up my notes to a desk notepad as soon as I can. Then onto the computer and now I will be saving them onto a cloud based back-up service. Any recommendations? I don't want to use Google drive, not a fan of Google. Cheers all Vince

Cheers Nige. One Drive seems to fit the bill. Documents written to My Docs folder can be directed to save via the cloud by default. Extra storage space is not too expensive for my needs for an added bonus. Cheers for helping out. Vince

I do backup important files - now and again. I know I should have a more rigorous regime but .......
A couple of questions
1. How many people do you know who have had a hard drive fail on them? Sorry Stig, I know it has just happened to you but I'm guessing that until then, you had never had a problem with a drive.
2. Ignoring the possible issues of someone else being the holder of your important data, isn't cloud storage only practicable for those with a very fast internet connection?

Dave I agree Dave, I think hard drives are pretty robust. But if it does fail or get corrupted and you loose your work then a reliable backup saves a whole lot of stress.
I'm not too worried about someone else holding my data, fact of life these days I feel. The fast internet connection issue is one I never considered, I have a fast connection but it maybe something for people to be aware of.

It seems to be that cloud is the way everyone is going. It's certainly something out company is moving into a lot more.
I still prefer to have all my data on HDDs at my house though. I try to store all the data on one, then run a manual backup occasionally to replicate to another one.
