This is at the shallow end of the pond, the photo taken through the water shows the bottom. There are what looks like strings of white dots. I am wondeing if they were toad spawn, which got frozen and thus died. What do you think? What are white dot strings 1 by Helen Skelton, on Flickr

As you say not a great photo which I can't seem to enlarge, but it certainly at least superficially look like a string of Common Toad spawn that is no longer viable & freezing is certainly a factor that could cause this.

Thank you aesshna. I am disparing for the pond life, especially the newts as anything that was remotely green and growing in the pond seems to have died with the frost. There were some diving beetles but they too have disappeared. I am worried about the frog spawn now and hope that does not go the same way.

Helen, I've got an old plastic fish tank that I used whenever I had to do a tank change for our goldfish. I'm planning on lifting out as much as the spawn as I can, (a lot more has appeared today) and will keep it in the tank, either in the summerhouse or indoors, depending on how low the temps are going to go. They are predicting a sharp dip in temperature down south over the next few days, so I'd imagine you're going to get it even colder.
A lot of the spawn died last year because of a late frost- don't want that to happen again. Do you have anything you could save some of your spawn in? As long as it's something that's never been washed with dishwashing soap it should be ok.

Unfortunately I am not able to do anything and my gardener can no longer get out here. I took a trundle around in my scooter, and most of the areas seem to by drying up. The spawn that the gardener did manage to transfer to the pond looks ok, but it was down quite deep so fingers crossed. Yes it is freezing cold here -3 degs last night.
