I'm not sure if it's just one squirrel or several, but it has been a real nuisance today... it has been on that peanut feeder as least seven times that I know of.
It's chased away the woodpecker, the blue tits, and the sparrows- but it knows, and every time I opened the garden door it was springing off into the trees before I could get out there and chase it away. Now that it's found a source of food it'll be back again tomorrow, but I have a surprise waiting for it.
I rolled the peanuts around in a cayenne pepper paste before filling the feeder.

I have pretty much given up feeding peanuts. The squirrels eventually damage the wire mesh so much they can get to the nuts easily or the nuts fall to the ground. I thought about getting a cage for the peanut feeder but a few days ago I spotted this - looks like cages, for a least one squirrel, are not a problem. The only consolation is the ports on the feeder are too small for the squirrel to get its greedy little mouth into. Dave sqinfeedercage by Dave Marley, on Flickr

I know what you mean about the mesh... I've had to resort to one like this-
It was a bit more expensive, but since it's lasted three winters now it's been worth it. No squirrel has been able to even make a dent in it!
I have heard of them getting into cages like yours and eating so much they weren't able to get out again.
