I've been clearing some of the pondweed out of the pond, trying to get it all tidy before winter sets in, (it's become terribly overgrown) and now the newts have got room to swim about it.
I counted five young ones this afternoon- not great photos because the water is quite murky, but it's possible to see the feathery gills in the second photo.

Looks good. I have a similar problem. In the winter the pond looks a fair size but by mid-summer many of the tall plants near the pond such as Hemp Agrimony, Purple Loosestrife, Water Figwort + Yellow Loosestrife seem to semi-collapse over the pond so it gets little light. I do a bit of light trimming but I'm not totally happy with it.
