This morning we went for a walk around our local country park. As we stood on the footbridge over the canal watching the Coot + Moorhen families I noticed a plastic bag that seemed to be jumping about. As I looked through my binoculars I was angered by the sight of this Perch with the front end of its body stuck in the bag + was thrashing around trying to escape. Unfortunately it was in the middle of the water + there was no way I could get to it + release it. I doubt it will be able to free itself, but hope I'm wrong. So frustrating to see wildlife suffering due to others negligence in carefully disposal of their rubbish.

I agree- despite charging for carrier bags, the roadsides, lakes and streams are still littered with the things.
Harking back to this photo I posted about back in April... the powers that be, (Enfield) have granted permission for a massive festival to be held in Trent Park tomorrow. The Friends of the park tried to contest it, but were ignored. Up to 25,000 could possibly attend... all crammed into a park with only two entrances and exits.
There is a wildlife hospital and rescue centre within the park; how those poor (already injured and distressed) animals are going to cope with the level of noise I can't imagine... to say nothing of the wildlife which actually lives in the park.
The festival's website says that "The vast surroundings of Trent Park, with its lush greenery, jaw-dropping scale and picturesque woodland, promises a day to remember..." and they promise there is going to be "Tonnes of confetti"!
Oh, yay.
I would expect this amount of rubbish to be tiny compared to what is going to be produced by the end of Saturday.
Why do natural spaces have to provide entertainment for those who don't give a stuff about natural spaces??

It does seem to be a strange place to hold such an event. I don't personally know Trent Park but I'm aware of a lot of good wildlife sightings there as it regularly pops up on sightings pages & I often receive e-mails about some of the birds, dragonflies, etc that get recorded there.
Let's hope the place isn't trashed!

Dropping litter really annoys me and I fail to understand the thought processes of those who do it. It is beyond me that anyone can have food or drink in a container and the just throw the contained away when they are finished.
I know what you mean RB about festivals. We are close to Wanstead Flats and while a 3 day festival has been rejected this year the Corporation of London have given go ahead for next year for a noon to midnight event each day with an estimate 50,000 per day.
There doesn't appear to be any recognition that open spaces are important because they are open spaces and not because they can be used for something else.
