It's one of our larger hoverflies, Volucella pellucens. A couple of common names have been invented such as Large Pied Hoverfly or Pellucid Hoverfly, but hardly any use them.
I usually see these flying above head height down woodland rides. Haven't seen one yet this year.
The smaller one appears to be another hoverfly- one of the Eristalis species.
