A elder has decided to come up right beside the path leading to our front door, and they are one of my favourite trees.
Not the best place for it to try and establish itself- it's going to get broken sooner or later, and I was going to try and get Snowlynx to dig it out. My question is, will this be possible? I know some trees, no matter how young hate to have their roots disturbed and I don't want to kill it if I can help it.
So far it's about two foot tall, maybe less... a bit spindly, because the soil there is very poor, and the aphids are giving it a hard time.
Can anyone advise me how to go about transplanting it?
I am bowing to the ancient wisdom of the Druids here- they believe the elder to be one of their sacred trees, and according to one article "It is said that a witch can turn herself into an elder tree and its wood is used for the making of magic wands. Elder trees were planted by houses to protect them from lightening and evil spirits."
I'd best look after this little one, else the consequences could be dire!

I've transplanted smaller ones successfully. Winter is usually best, when the sap has stopped rising, as there is less water loss. If you have to transplant it now, try to keep as much of the soil around the roots as you can and give it plenty of water at the new site, and keep watering for about a year

Thanks for that infor, Teasel- I might try keeping it in a pot for awhile, until I decide where to put it. They seem to be coming up everywhere this year- another has grown right up through the middle of the hedge. I keep putting off trimming it, because it's flowering so beautifully.

wikipedia says "The tree could only safely be cut while chanting a rhyme to the Elder Mother" so you'd better practice your chanting

Had a similar thing with a rowan seedling that appeared in a raised planter, so I put it in a small pot and let it sit the winter out in the raised bed. Potted it on in spring and it's a foot and a half tall now. No idea what I'm going to do with PS: do I need to chant as well Om Om ian

wikipedia doesn't say anything about chanting for a rowan, but it has many associations with witchcraft Also many uses of the berries and the wood
