Suddenly noticed that there were lots of small shells around the sandy edges of the pond, which is losing its water level in this warm dry weather. I then realised there were tiny snails wandering about the bottom. I have got Mud Snail - Bithynia tentaculata. Obviously transferred from large ditch area, when we were moveing some of the growth and frog spawn from it to the pond. Photo of shell taken on wood seat by pond. Now the question is what is what under water is eating them? Snail Mud Bithynia tentaculata by Helen Skelton, on Flickr

I have learnt from Frog Life that newts eat them and as I have quite a few Palmate Newts they are probably eating them.

I expect a lot of things eat the small ones Flatworms have a tubular mouth half way along their body and can eat snails and bivalves. According to the internet, so can leeches
