I wonder if other olive oil producing countries also do this.

I must admit I have never heard of this, but I should have thought it is easily overcome by sounding an alarm amongst the trees before the olives are harvested. However, it is simply appalling by anyone standards and just wonder if Greece and Cyprus are also guilty.
Boycotting the guilty may be one course of action since hitting profits often works, we do not consume olive oil ourselves but there must be thousands in the UK alone who do.

Although the harvesting is done at night I tend to agree. Flushing the birds out of the trees even with the risk that they might be caught by night time predators must be better than this.
I'll be looking to see the source of te olive oil we used from now on.

I only buy olive oil from a Greek supplier... we visited their olive oil press several years ago when on holiday there, and I like it so much it's the only one I buy now.
I have just emailed them and asked if they use this method of harvesting. I am hoping they don't. They are a small company, so fingers crossed they can't afford machinery like that.
