I think I've found the reason for all our spawn vanishing... it seemed to all go, within the course of a week. Rather than having the hundreds of tadpoles like there's been in previous years, I think we've got two. Or that's all I was able to see after standing out by the pond for about ten minutes watching. About six newts, though.
So I came in and did a search on the computer, and found this video...
If this is what happened, they ate a LOT of frogspawn. One person who commented below the video said they take some spawn out and keep it in a bucket until the tads hatch and are too big for the newts to eat. Looks as though I might need to do that next year

Great video. My frog population went into freefall at least in part to newt predation.

Poor taddies. it is not just newts that eat them, first it was ducks eating the spawn, then newts then Greater Diving lavae. Luckily this years I have hundreds of taddies.
