Hello, everyone-
I've looked into tightening up security for WaBi, and one change I'm intending to make is to make the forums viewable to members only... guests will no longer be able to read posts.
One reason for this is we have hundreds of 'visitors' to the forum every day... I don't know if these are genuine members who simply don't log in, or if they are lurkers hoping to steal photographs- or even people who are not wildlife-lovers, but want to know where certain species are being sited. This is one of my main concerns, especially in the cases of things like owls, birds or prey or foxes.
We have dozens and dozens of registered members who joined and never post a thing, and it will allow me to see if these are our mystery visitors or not.
I hope this doesn't create a nuisance for anyone- it will mean logging in before being able to see your posts, but I did want to let you all know before I adjust the settings!

A very good idea, I now have a Sparrowhawk building its nest just outside my bedroom window, another one nesting close to the calling tree plus one building in the drive, although these are common birds my whereabouts remains a guarded secret as always, just in case jungle Jim should strike once again. Latest update... it now seems I might not be able to do this after all.
I tried it earlier today, and rather than showing our homepage if anyone clicks on a link to Wabi, it goes to a Proboards page saying 'You must register to see this forum'... and it's rather ugly, and quite officious. I think it would put off anyone who had been thinking of joining, (I don't know why they had to do it like that- I presumed viewers would be able to see all the boards, just not be able to view the posts.)
I had a read through some of the ProBoards community advice threads, and it seems that a lot of what appear to be 'visitors' are actually bots, from Google and other search engines. Setting our security up so visitors can't post is supposed to be the best way to stop spammers, (any forums who get a lot of spammers- thirty a day, some were getting! are recommended only allowing members to post.)
Anyway, at the moment that's how things stand... visitors can still see our posts, so it's best not to give precise locations of any vulnerable wildlife!
