When trying to photograph the frog spawn, I spotted a small newt in on of the pond baskets- it was only about two inches long, and was eating something. I enlarged the photos on the computer, (it's VERY grainy) but I think it's caught a water louse.
I wasn't expecting to see them in the pond so soon in the year, so when an adult surfaced I was taken by surprise and simply pointed the camera and took the phone. It's a bit blurry, but I am so pleased they're back again! I saw two again this morning, but swimming too deep to get a decent shot. They'll be easier to photograph once the sun starts shining on the pond in another month.
I'm fascinated by them... they're like little water-dragons, gliding amongst the pond weeds.
