Back before Christmas, we both received mailings from Amazon...
Snowlynx got a letter trying to tempt him into signing up to Prime, while I got one trying to get me to 'return' to Prime. (I never willingly signed up to it in the first place, but once during a checkout seem to have accidentally ticked something. They are sneaky about it, and I immediately requested it be cancelled.)
Anyway, both of these letters came with plastic cards attached- they look like credit cards but serve no function whatsoever. They have our names on them, but are just decorative things stuck to the letters, (for lack of a better word?) They might make a decent bookmark, but other than that they will end up in the bin... two near-indestructable, thick bits of plastic.
How many of these stupid things did Amazon send out over Christmas?? I mean, with all the publicity in the press and in the media lately over single-use plastics ending up in the sea and in landfill.... and they go and intentionally send something out (in the thousands, I've no doubt) of something that isn't even a single use at all??
Even the sodding plastic tubs containing fruit and veg at Tescos do serve a purpose at least ONCE, but this??
I was fuming, (and now I am again- up goes the bloodpressure, I'm sure!) and I told Snowlynx that under no circumstances were we to use Amazon over Christmas... and we managed not to. (It wasn't easy, but good old Etsy did very nicely instead, thank you very much.)
I just now came across the stupid things while having a clearout, and suddenly felt the need to vent. I think I'll send them back to Amazon with a good rant attached to them. No one will listen, but I'll feel better for it. Grrrrrrrrrr ! ! ! !

I had one of those and I sent it back to them with a letter. I found a directors name somewhere using google, and there was a very small registered office address printed somewhere on the paperwork. I doubt it ever got to someone who cared, but I felt better - at least it was their bin it went into!

I got one too and thought what a waste as well. Every time I go to the checkout it seems to offer a months free prime trial. However Gill my other half received an echo for Christmas 'the dab radio is always losing station' and an internet connected device seemed a good idea, all radio stations are free and she likes to listen to the radio when in the kitchen. I hate the radio all the constant dribble the presenters ramble on and on drives me nuts so I signed up again '3rd time' for prime and at least I'm loving the choice and jibber jabber free music I think when the primes months up I'll sign up for the free amazon music trial another month and quite possibly after that pay for the single device membership. After all 50,000,000 tunes should see me sorted for a while ian

Know what you mean about Amazon but I can't complain too much as I use them.
However, I think the treatment of workers in the distribution centres isn't all that good and while it nice to get things quickly I don't think anyone should be having to work in a way that means they are delivering things at close to 10pm, and that is before talking about the waste involved - a box big enough for a pack of paper used to deliver an SD card!
A similar thing happens with most of our post now. We don't often get unrequested plastic cards via the post but I think more than 80% of our mail is junk mail and passes through the house straight into the appropriate bin. The waste of resources is huge.

I write return to sender on my junk mail, wait a few days, and post it back to them. It usually stops after a while.

I use amazon smile as you can name your charity which then receives a small percentage of what you spend. I agree on the over-sized packaging but at least things are delivered. Being 'remote' is a problem with delivery of anything, so I check if it can be bought through amazon as for some reason they don't have any problem delivering here. I know that companies South of the border send their good to Glasgow and then distributed to various couriers, some of which are appalling and can take up to a week to deliver - one in particular just registers that he was unable to deliver as no one was in. I have even had a delivery taking over a month! I don't know if it is by using 'Smile' but as yet I have not received any junk mail or plastic.
