This morning looked out to see what I thought was the female GSW in the garden, but she was acting strangely- as though she didn't understand how to get on the feeders. I watched her for awhile, and saw the distinctive red cap and realised that it was a juvenile. He (or she) has sussed out how to use the log feeder, (and no wonder it's having to be filled every day, if three woodpeckers are using it!) but keeps to the trees rather than use the feeding station. I was a bit curious... isn't it a bit big for a juvenile? It can't be a fledgling from this year, can it? I'm guessing it might be a late hatchling from last summer, although not sure about this. The male woodpecker who visits was a red-capped youngster earlier this year, so could have had an earlier start, I presume.

It's a juvenile from this year. Birds from last year won't have a red cap like this.

Right, thanks for that aeshna. This morning both parents came, along with the young one... I wasn't able to get all three of them in the photo , but did manage to get Dad and Junior itogether.
