So delight that this wee Roe Deer appeared Yesterday evening and was here again today. It is a female, but question is she pregnant or feeding a fawn. If you look at her hind leg where it comes up to join her white tummy it looks to me like a teat. Do do the teats show when pregnant as well as when feeding? Hi Helen, I am sitting in the Bird Obsevatory at Sandwich Bay, in Kent. The Warden, Stephan and I were talking about your Roe deer. And it seems that female roe deer do have a tail and that is what you are seeing on the deer's rump it is a light brown colour, Google Roe Deer tails. Duncan Ps males don't have tails

I might have misunderstood your question but am I correct in thinking you are referring to the white mark on the belly of the deer and in front of the right hip? If so, I think that is just a small area of white fur. This female will not be pregnant now even though any mating probably took place in July or August. Roe deer have delayed implantation which occurs in January. It is also unlikely she is feeding now as the foals are born in May/June and suckled for around three months. Dave BTW I am not an expert on Roe Deer(or anything else) but the Mammal Society website - www.mammal.org.uk/species-hub/uk-mammal-list/ -, is very good. Dave

No I am not talking about white mark on belly, but just touching the white mark of the left and touching the leg on the right is what looks like a small brown teat.

I'm still not sure what you are asking about, Helen. However, I still think it is unlikely a female roe deer is still suckling young or is pregnant enough to show now. My knowledge is minimal so I am happy to be corrected.

Hi Helen, I googled "roe deer teats" and their udder is placed between the back legs, what you have in your photo could possibly be the remains of the umbilical cord maybe. Or it could be a growth of an injury. Duncan

I don't think it is a growth either as in various photos there are a least three teats. Having read up, I think this is just a pregnant female getting ready for the breeding season. She looks very healthy in preparation for the winter.
