Hi There, Iv'e been busy in the garden digging 350mm down alongside the fence in order to put 6mm x 6mm galvanized wire mesh, 1200mm long x 300mm deep, this is to keep the rats from digging under the wooden fence, I have started on the opposite side of the garden today, it has gravel boards on that side, man it's hard work, got a few aches but if it keeps them out I'll be pleased, I have not seen a rat in the garden for 3 days now, so keeping fingers crossed that they are gone, Duncan P1030879 by Duncan Mclean, on Flickr P1030880 by Duncan Mclean, on Flickr P1030882 by Duncan Mclean, on Flickr

That is a lot of back-breaking work! I certainly do hope it works.

I know that rats can climb but they don't like to be exposed for long, I have not seen the rats for 6 days now so I think the poison that I put out in the bait boxes has done the trick. The mesh around the bottom of the fences is more of a preventive measure for the future

The rats are back, they are not coming in under the fence they are under the shed but I have bought some more poison wax blocks and I am putting it out making sure that they are not available to the hedgehogs, I put them down the hole then block it off with a slab.I put a humane wire cage trap out with a bit of pork on the hook and placed it in a position where I thought was safe and that the hedgehogs could not get to, I was wrong, I went out to check the trap and found a hedgehog in it, It was not hurt so I got it out and placed it in the hedgehog box. It was at its food bowl that same night. No more traps Duncan

Seems you have blocked the entry points now. Hope you can sort the ones under the shed.
I think the trap has dealt with the current youngsters here. Last night was the first for a while that it caught nothing.

The 2 poison sachets that I put into a hole under the shed has gone and I replenished it, and a hole the hole at the back of the shed which had 3 poison blocks has gone, 2 more sachets of pasta put in there and the holes blocked off once more, either they are immune to the poison or there is a lot more of them than I thought, Note; the name for a gathering of rats is "A Mischief"
I'll give em mischief, yeahh! Duncan

I agree about terriers. In a contained space a few Jack Russells/Borders/Patterdales would deal with most rats and, I think, the general disturbance would cause any not caught to leave.
Unfortunately you rats have place under the shed. Do you know any one with a ferret?

Ferrets. That is something which is worth considering, the hole is still there, the other hole still had the poison in it yesterday but have not checked today yet. Duncan

Having kept ferret’s I would not recommend using them, the standard method was to smoke them out using a length of hose attached to an engine exhaust pipe with a couple of terriers standing by something like jack Russell’s. Failing that a paraffin soaked rag wrapped around a stick is placed down the hole and lit, leaving the terriers to do the rest. We also use to another method and probably the best but this is not recommended unless one really knows what they are doing. Note For obvious never use petrol! Alan

Alan, thanks for the tips on clearing them out, I have checked both holes about 1 hour ago and the the poison I put down 2 days ago is still there, hopefully that is an end to them but if they return I think I'll employ one or more of your suggestions,
