This spent a couple of days on my fence - can someone tell me what it is?

OK Alf, Iv'e had a look at it and can tell you it is called a "Looper Caterpillar" from the Geometer moths, so I googled Scalloped spp and the closest was Scalloped Hazel, try it, On your photo the head is at 2.75" and the tail is at 1", they are sometimes referred to as inch worms, using their prolegs they stretch out then hold on with the front legs and bring the back legs up to the front ones forming a loop, then repeat the movement to travel along a twig or branch and if disturbed they stand up to make them look like a small twig.
