Planting a new shrub in the garden the other day and dug up several of these little monsters, cockchafer grubs I would say and they bite ian cockchafer grub by ian robinson, on Flickr

From looking at photos online I agree with the ID, Ian.
Quite a 'monster', but then the adults are sizeable beasts too.

Bit of useless information here being a simple country boy – pleb, we use to call cockchafers midsummer dor, and funnily enough our children - also plebs, called them gumbees.
