Duncan, I wish I could be of some help but fungi identification is not something I am knowledgeable about.
Lovely photo of it there with the ivy, though.

I know... there were so many knowledgeable members there. I think after it went down for the second time, people became a bit disillusioned.

Just to add to fungi ID problems a little more. I spotted this earlier this morning. I have not seen a fungus with what appears to be gills on the top of the cap before - the first photo is of the top of the cap. I have tried Google images for 'fungi with gills on the top of the cap' but the Google search seems to focus on the, "fungi with gills.." part, so I get thousands of hits. I have also tried looking for images of 'fungi with black gills' but the hits rarely show the top of the cap so I'm stumped again. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks Dave

Thanks Ash for your best guess of the fungi being the Butter Cap- Rhodocollybia butyracea (var, asema ), I have looked in books and on line and I think you are correct with the name, Duncan

I wish Fungi John had come over from WAB to WABI he was great on fungi, and Venger, brilliant on spiders Duncan Fungi John is on fungi.org.uk/index.php set up by ex WAB admin members. Some of the real experts in their field also joined. They also include rusts, Smuts and mildew, Lichen and other types of wild flora trees etc (those that get or have fungal disease). They are very picky about how you ask for ID, no just posting a photo fungi, you have to show gill/pores, colour, smell, what colour when cut through etc., you have to show exactly what you have shown here. A number of times I have been ticked off for not saying where it was appearing - under what trees where in the country, ground type etc.

Duncan
Your fungus is most certainly Rooting Shank, Xerula radicata. The wrinkles on the cap are the clue. Rhodocollybia butyracea is usually smooth.
Very good information by the way.

Thank you Alison for your input, it's because of people like yourself that knowledge is gained and shared, Best wishes and welcome to WABI Duncan ps I have checked out Rooting shank and I don't know how I missed it in my Blacks Nature Guide or my Roger Philips Mushrooms it's so obvious once it is pointed out, LOL

Don't worry Ash, I totally missed it too. I prefer to stay with this site it's like the old WAB site with people helping to id things, hopefully, people will post for Id's more and keep the site turning over, I try to help where I can, Duncan
