I was walking along the upper reaches of the River Clydach in the Swansea Valley yesterday and saw a very beautiful blue winged dragonfly? It had four wings and was flying in a fluttery jerky way along the river. Any ideas what it may have been? I did not see the torso of the insect but its wings were vivid blue.

As far I know and looking my dragonfly books there isn't a blue winged dragonfly. However, I think it is most likely you have spotted the Beautiful Demoiselle (Calopterys virgo) damselfly. Depending on the light and the age the wings vary in colour from purple-brown to deep blue-violet. They are the most striking of the damselflies and deserve the name 'Beautiful'.
