Hi all a long story will keep it short. I found a baby sparrow approx 9 days old. He was lying at the bottom of my mom's guttering. Must have been washed out by the rain. It was cold and not moving. Have fed it up krpt it warm and now he/she is eating millet and seed. This was 5 weeks ago. Gordon as he has been called is now flying and behaving like a sparrow. I have been on hols for a wk so my mom (bless her) has been looking after Gordon. He doesn't seem as tame which is a good thing. Question is what's the likelihood he/she can be released back into the wild?

Hello, Juju- Firstly, well done for hand rearing Gordon successfully! I've never reared a baby bird, but I do know it's not always an easy thing to do. You don't mention in your post where in the country you are located, but it might be an idea to search for any local animal shelters that specialise in wild animals and birds. I think that if you release him without preparation, (especially the weather being what it is at the moment- the sparrows in my garden are struggling, and they are used to it) he won't have an easy time of it. I think what a shelter might do is keep him in an enclosed area or aviary for a while with other sparrows, to give him a chance to rewild himself and learn how to be with other birds. If you can give us a rough idea of where you are, (as far as region or county) then someone here might know of a wildlife centre near you that they've used or know of that can be recommended, and hopefully someone more knowledgable than I am can give better advice. And welcome to WABI, too. PS. Sorry- just now saw your other post about the weather, and realised you'd said where you are. "Bilston...West Midlands". I'll have a google.
