I noticed this on one of my old beech trees and cannot make out if it is a fungal growth or some type of gall. I also cannot make out if something (bird) is using it as a nest. The two growths I have seen previously eg - the elephant and the tortoise were almost smooth. DSCF2481 by Helen Skelton, on Flickr

Looks like a gall to me. One of the most common is the Crown Gall but I'm not knowledgeable enough to make a positive ID.

I got an ID - it is a Burl - A burl results from a tree undergoing some form of stress. It may be caused by an injury, virus or fungus. Google 'burl on trees' - very interesting! burls from certain trees fetch a high price and there are even poachers of burls.

I haven't heard of burls before - interesting info online.
