I know our Tawny is nesting near by - lots of noise at night and hissing sound of babes. Do tawny's nest near the ground? This looks like it may be the nest, I could not get near as tree hanging on to extremely steep slope, and I would probably get stuck in boggy land below slope, so using zoom this is the best I can get. End of house is at top of this slope. I have done an inspection of all the other trees around as I know sound can travel. 20150612_13 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

They don't normally nest close to the ground as it would leave them vulnerable to predation.

Disappointing outcome, but re- the question. Tawny owls have occasionally been documented nesting on the ground, although it is far from common. If you find a young bird at the base of a tree like this its either most likely to have fallen through the internal cavity floor of the nest or its fallen externally after branching then walked into the base of the tree for shelter. Tawny & Barn will both occasionally nest on the ground at the base of a hollow tree trunk accessing it from above and with no access at ground level.
