On Sunday my partner sadly presented me with this moth. Unfortunately its wing had been clipped by the lawnmower. It was lame but still trying to fly. It's underwings were yellow. Is it some sort of Yellow Underwing?

My guess is Lesser Broad-Bordered Yellow Underwing. Perhaps clearer with this picture. What do you thnk? nnn3-1 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

Aside from other things, Lesser Broad-bordered and most of the other yellow underwings fly later. I agree with aeshna this is a Large Yellow Underwing.

Thanks. Happy to be corrected by those with more knowledge! But the Yellow Underwings seem to be quite variable. And I still have a bit of a conscience about this one.

Agree they are variable. LBBYU doesn't fly until late July though, so this one can definitely be ruled out Nige

According to my records (!!!!!!) last year I saw LBBYU on 27 Aug and LYU on 2 Aug and 5 Sep
It will be interesting to see pattern of what I trap this year.

Yeah I think things are a little messed up this year at the moment. Think I said in another thread that on 10/06 this year I had 13 moths of 6 species. In the same location on 11/06 last year I had 171 moths of 46 species. That's a pretty big shift in numbers really! Will be interesting to see if there's a bit of a boom in the next couple of weeks.
