I collected these haws, to make a cold remedy tincture out of (put them in a large bottle, add brandy and let steep for about a month- agitate every few days.) Didn't know you could do that with haws. Does it alter the taste as sloes in gin do or is just a vitamin boost?

Sounds like a good idea Rowanberry, it is a shame many traditions and old country names are not used more these days, as children we use to call these bread and cheese, although they taste nothing like bread and cheese of course.

Ian, it doesn't alter the taste very much... the elderberries do, though! I have heard of people who add sugar to it to sweeten it, but since I'm making it for medicinal reasons (she says ) but I don't. Probably because it would be too tempting to finish off the bottle before winter was half over. Alan, I've always wondered why it was called bread and cheese... you're right, it certainly tastes nothing like that!
