I think it is a Common Garden Spider Araneus diadematus but don't quote me:) Definitely not this. I think they may be Tegenaria species that frequently have the chevron pattern on the abdomen + very "leggy" like these.

Thanks for the suggestions. Aeshna5 put me on the right track - the size, colouring (brown/orange or grey)and chevrons are typical of T. domestica and if I'd done a more thorough search through my old records I'd have found it under its newer scientific name of Eratigena atrica!
