After the birds decimated the flower border in our new garden, I just left it to see what came up. We now have a thin strip containing an amazing assortment of grasses and wild flowers which Mrs A refers to (fairly accurately) as weeds. The field poppies, foxglove and knapweed are rather nice, the Scotch Thistle rather vicious! I haven't been able to identify this one - any ideas? DSCF74301 by Alf Parker, on Flickr

I'm sure you're right. My very old field guide to wild flowers shows a very different leaf arrangement but looking on the internet it seems this is indeed one of the bistorts. It's quite a small (no more than 30cm) bushy plant but that may be because the soil is so poor.

It's Redshank, Persicaria maculosa, which is related to Bistort but more of a weedy annual.
