Found this coming up this morning in with some cosmos seedlings, (which I've obviously been over-watering). I've googled for images of white mushrooms with warts, but couldn't find anything similar. I know it's necessary for an mushroom id to see the underside of the cap, but I'm reluctant to pull it up and possibly uproot the cosmos as well. I thought someone might have an idea, even without seeing the gills.

could it be a shaggy ink cap? I know very little about fungi but it looks a little familiar

I was going to photograph it as it progressed, but unfortunately the cap turned black and fell off before it completely opened.

It is an Ink cap but not the "Shaggy Ink cap". Impossible to say which without using a microscope.

It looks like a Shaggy Inkcap to me. Our field is currently full of them. Don't know about the 'warts' though! )
