Saw a Painted Lady yesterday, very briefly (no pictures). I was in North London. I enquired on FB and someone said it might be a good year for them. Anyone else seen any? Deb

I had to Google it, but haven't seen one of those yet...maybe once the budldleia bush in the back garden blooms we might start getting a few butterflies.
All this time, what I thought was a Red Admiral, (similar to Painted Lady) turned out to really be a Peacock Butterfly.

I think 2009 was the best year I've ever witnessed for them. Lovely to see one of these visitors again. I'm interested to know if others are seeing any. Here in North London it also seems to be a good year for the Small Tortoiseshell and the Peacock.

We had Painted Ladies in the buddleia last year and the year before. 2013 was a better year for them, with only a few sightings last year. I now have two buddleia so maybe we'll get a few more butterflies.

I would think that it's a bit early for migrant painted ladies. I've always seen them much later in the year. I wonder if it's an overwintered one (I didn't think they overwintered)?

There have only been a couple of records in Derbyshire this year so far but I haven't seen one yet

Definitely not too early for migrants. In fact they can turn up in tiny numbers in the winter but rarely last. The mass immigration Deb refers to in 2009 was in May when many millions turned up.
I've not had one yet but quite a few reports particularly on the south coast + good numbers on the continent. Fingers crossed for an influx- I saw only about three last year.

Yup they cant overwinter in out climate (even during our mild winters). I haven't seen any up here, also interestingly I am yet to record Red Admiral yet this year which is slightly worrying. Counts on the whole have been quite low for other common species too. It is possible that the pro-longed cold northerlies and westerlies we have had up here have had a negative impact on the Red Admirals, like in 2013.

There has been a few reports of painted lady here in cheshire so far this year last year there were very few with 1st report on 6 may, my 1st and only 1 last year was on 26 may one of only 5 records for may last year all reports last year were of singles except one of 3 the peak hear was in july august but with good reports from the continent so far this year could be a good year for them if we get some good weather MIKE
