Visited a disused limestone quarry in North Wales on Tuesday looking at Common Spotted Orchid, Northern Marsh Orchid and their hybrids. The first generation hybrid is D x venusta and is seen here alongside a Common Spotted Orchid, with the x venusta on the left; This is a fine example of the other parent, Northern Marsh Orchid. Most of the plants at Minera are much smaller than this one: There is then a fine assortment of second and subsequent generation back crosses as shown in the next post. Jeff Hodgson

Some hold the view that these are not in fact hybrids but a variation of Northern Marsh Orchis, v cambrensis, ususally found growing close to the coast in North Wales. For those who remember him, I’ve sought advice on these plants from Dorts, of WAB fame, and it is his view that they are all within the range of D xvenusta, that is hybrids rather than a variant: All interesting stuff, illustrating perfectly the difficulties one sometimes has in identifying different plants in a hybrid swarm such as this Jeff Hodgson

There are NM orchids in Wales? Shows what I know, thought they were found in Scotland only. I've never seen one, far as I know.

Plenty of Northern Marsh Orchid in North Wales. We're just about on the crossover point between Northern Marsh and Southern Marsh here in Chester Jeff Hodgson

Can't you persuade his to join here. Dorts gave me an unbelievable amount of advice not just about orchids but wild plants I was trying to encourage here and advice when I was trying to clear the land.
