while trying to photograph my tadpoles at the allotment, I found a newt! It had yellow on it's belly and large black spots, but a plain throat. I think it was female as it seemed rather plump around its middle. My palmate newts at home have plain throats, but don't seem to get so yellow so I'm confused (easily done ) I was surprised to see it so forgot to photograph it, so can smooth newts have plain throats? Cheers

I'm afraid that I don't know, either... I've never seen any of our for long enough to be sure, (they surface and dive so quickly.) I did find this website that says "the best pointer is the darker spotting or speckling on the throats of Smooth Newts." www.herpetofauna.co.uk/smooth_newt.asp

thanks rowanberry. I only have palmate in my garden so have only seen pictures of smooth. I'll try for a picture next time. I don't know why I didn't take a photo at the time - too excited as finding it I expect
