For a week or so now one of the pine martens has been systematically digging out the earth in a large pot in which I grow strawberries. Keep catching him/her at it. Well nearly all the earth is out now apart from maybe an inch or so at the bottom. So apart from earth all over the deck, seems it has ruined my crop for it's next growth. The shoots were just beginning to re-appear. Re: my strawberry growing - I just leave the plants in the pot and at the end of season when the plants have died back I just remove the dead leaves, end of story I can't be bothered to replant every year. they give me a good crop every year so why bother.
Anyway what is Pine Marten up to?

Maybe it's finding earthworms or other tasty invertebrates or at least hoping too?

Having kept ferrets and polecats for quite a few years albeit in the past, I can vouch for the fact that the family mustelid are very curious animals,to which it is more then possible that it can sense the earth has recently be disturbed. And so it is probably looking for a food source, they also have a very good sense of smell.
