I know it's a long shot, since I don't have a recording of it but I've been hearing a bird calling for the past few weeks that is completely unfamiliar. I've gone through recordings of all the birds familiar to around here, and it's not any of them. It has a very distinct, four note song, and the best way I can describe it is it's as though it's saying 'ammoudiá' over and over... long pauses in between. (I tried studying Greek several years ago, and it's one of the words I remember- it means beach. ) So the bird is calling Am-moo-THEE-ah.....Am-moo-THEE-ah; About three or four times, and then it's gone. I've never been able to catch a glimpse of it, whatever it is.

Song Thrush? Obviously difficult without hearing it. I have been hearing the odd one singing a little + they repeat phrases.

I agree with aeshna.
The three or four repetitions and that you have been hearing it for a few weeks so it would appear to be a common bird suggests song thrush. However, I think song thrush would have featured in the recordings you have checked and I haven't heard one singing at this time of year, but it is still my best guess.

Agree a thrush of sorts. Have you tried this site for songs, love it even if on as a background when working, there are a few four repetition birds on it www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2xXs0JfBhY

Hmm it is always worth remembering that songbirds can and do have regional accents, different / larger repertoires, not to mention the imitator’s namely the corvids to which the jay is a perfect example. As is the song thrush in which I have heard producing a pretty good impression of the Sparrowhawk, also some songbirds such as the robin do sing all the year round to guard their territory, indeed I have even heard a robin sing at midnight on Christmas day.

I've listened to about a dozen recordings now, and I've still not heard it! The weather wasn't good today, so I've not been out in the garden other than to fill the feeders...if it improves tomorrow I'll try and get out there and listen for it. I'm completely stumped.

I can rarely fit a written bird song to an actual bird song so I'm lost with your "Am-moo-THEE-ah", but Song Thrush does have a wide range of songs/sounds/calls. Try Xeno-canto.
