The oaks around our way did well this year...the ground was carpeted with acorns in the nearby woods. The ones I collected are drying nicely- these are destined to be a Christmas day treat for the jays. Acorns Oct 2016 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

What a good idea, I often go for walks in the autumn and see acorns on the ground but have never thought of bringing them home as bird food, do they attract any other species of birds besides jays?

So far it's only been the jays take them... the starling have look but then chuck them off the birdtable!
The jays usually start ignoring them by late winter- perhaps the acorns are too dried out by then?
