All day a helicopter has been passing over every 20 minutes, dropping off fencing posts and material - very quick turn around as they pick up load bring it up here off load and back for more. So the birds. The first few of times the helicopter went over they all panicked and dived for the cover of the trees, there after they ignored the helicopter, group decision that it was not a danger. I noticed the same reaction with sheep and cows, when the steam train comes into hearing range they make a run for it going to the end of the field away from the track, but when the local train goes past they totally ignore it, because it is a sound they have got used to, but the steam train is only occasionally. The birds panic if a car comes up the drive, but outwith here the cattle and sheep ignore cars, in fact wont get out the way at times.

There's been some building work going on about three houses over from us- lots of hammering and drilling going on, and I was interested to see that the birds just ignore it. They do seem to learn quickly which sounds signify danger.

I find it interesting that while some sheep do not appear clued up about traffic and wander across roads without regard, the majority have learnt about cars and other vehicles. They know most of the time the vehicles stay on the black stuff and sitting very close to road is perfectly safe.
The same can't be said of red deer. They do not meet traffic and people as frequently as sheep but there are many areas where deer regularly graze near roads but they do not seem to have learnt and often run as traffic approaches. Unfortunately they seem just as likely to run into the road as away from it.
