I have spent a good part of the afternoon going through feather IDs - raptors, game, general and cannot find a feather to match this one - any ideas what bird it came from? It was under one of the feeders and does not match any of the birds I have here - help please

It looks very much like one of the innermost secondaries of the jay Helen.

Well blow me down! So far with my jays I have only seen their blue feathers and a few tail feathers so obviously got confused with this one ops! Thanks Alan

I've never seen one like that either... and I've been collecting feathers from the jays for years, too.
I always like finding one of the little barred blue ones from the top of their wings.

Feather id can be quite tricky, even though this example is very distinctive it is not always so and of course feathers from different parts of the bird’s body do not always look like they could have come from the very same bird as shown in this example.
Feathers can also be often blown or taken away by animals / birds to build their nests with so I suppose as in many other things it is just a case of being in the right place at the right time.
