The wasps made their nest in a bird box on the veranda, been furiously busy for weeks with wasps lining up around the entrance hole and seem to have filled the box with their amazingly constructed nest. now the puzzle, for the last few days I have not seen a single wasp, not even flying around the garden. Any ideas? Do they migrate once the nest complete and job done? I know the weather has not been good - rain! Has something happened to them?

Wasp nests should be at their busiest at this time of year- full of activity. They don't migrate as such. It is bizarre- very wet weather isn't good for them like most insects, but wouldn't have thought this would result in the total demise of the colony.

I am at a loss for an answer. The wasps are not the only insect that seems to have disappeared, I have only seen two bumbles in the last week and one largish hover fly. However the small insects and flies seem to be doing ok, though I suspect not enough for the birds as for the last week the birds have been frantic at the feeders and can honestly say I have never had so many around here.
