Yesterday, we saw definite proof that the blackbirds have not two, but three fledglings. I'm astounded, given the condition of the male's leg that the parents managed to successfully rear a brood this size. I'd suspected that there might be three, because even though I hadn't been able to see all of them at once it did seem that there was too much coming and going for there to only be a pair. This morning I was able to get this VERY bad photo with all of them in it. One seems to be much more timid, and is reluctant to come too close. His bolder siblings come and hoover up all the mealworms I scatter for them on the ground while he's still up in the tree making his mind up whether to risk it or not. The other two do everything together...I'll be curious to see what gender they turn out to be, so hopefully they'll stick around until they get some adult plumage coming in. One is more russet while the other is paler, but both still very speckled so I can't tell yet.

Today was the day to learn about the birdbath...they didn't actually get in it, but perch on the edge and stare into the water. The sparrows splashing about in it are especially intriguing. Fledgling by the BirdBath by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

They are a delight. Blackbirds do seem to have done ok this year, not so the thrushes, have you got any round your patch?
