Hello playmates, yes the wanderer has returned once more from watching Little owls looking much like the sheik of Araby (tan.)
So on returning home our young buzzards are now on the wing calling to be fed as are the young Sparrowhawks, and of course the local juvenile little owls are as entertaining has only they can be. In fact the behaviour of these birds is extremely comical from their running style to the stretched sentinel look, much like a demented Meerkat on steroids! In fact the behaviour of these birds never fails to impress and amuse from their hunting behaviour to dispersal, each pair varying in their range of behaviour.
During this time I have also been doing some experimenting with different sizes of scopes, three sizes two of which are now much too heavy to carry any distance, well for Alan they are! So I have now decided to stick with binoculars and straight 52mm mighty midget travelscope that seems to do the job quite adequately, together with a monopod it makes for a very light convenient combination.
Just a word of warning though if you are thinking of buying one these particular scopes my advice is to give then a thorough work out first. They suit my particular task of watching these birds just out of reach of binoculars but would not be suitable for everyone’s needs.

Having now escaped quarantine, today was most eventful starting with a fox that stopped and looked Alan up and down, I wonder why! Perhaps it was admiring the new me, complete with new boots.
My badgers seem to be getting on just fine too having made enough spoil to fill pike pit twice over, and the local hobbies were calling once again as only they can do.
So it would seem summer has arrived at last with quite a few corn buntings showing and plenty of butterflies on the wing which is both excellent news. Our adult little owls were also still busy feeding their youngsters too, so all seems to be well.

Alan, why were you in quarantine?
It sounds as though you have an abundance of wildlife around you... I've always been fond of badgers.

Sorry Rowanberry, I was just referring to staying at home due to all the rain we had on that day, let’s just say it is just one more example of Alan’s sense of humour. Alan

and plenty of butterflies on the wing which is both excellent news. Do you think your butterfly numbers are about the same as usual? Numbers are way down around here, (and that also seems to be the general consensus on the butterfly forum that I use).

Hmm that is strange because I think this has been the best year for ages, but on the other hand I have more set a side this year that I have left to go wild into wild flower meadows hoping for skylarks to benefit, but maybe next year. Just rare sightings of small tortoiseshells and a few whites so far here this year.

Like wise here Alf. I spent an hour, butterfly log in hand and only saw 1 green-veined. White tailed bumbles and carders not doing very well either. wasps doing well! They have made nest in bird box on veranda. And maybe something that has mini caterpillars! Not seen caterpillars nor moths, but my veg patch has been trashed every leaf on the broccoli, Brussels and Kale has been nibbled away, just leaving a skeleton of the leaf. It is not the slugs and I don't have snails. I know it is not the slugs as very few this year and in desperation I put slug pellets all around the veg (usually refuse to use them) and there is not a single dead slug.
Sorry I have digressed from the theme.
