Found these jay feathers on the ground in the campsite grounds where we stayed in Kent, near Margate. It looks similar to a sparrowhawk kill, but would a sprawk take on a jay? That's a pretty good-sized bird, and one likely to put up quite a fight. I've seen clips on YouTube of sparrowhawks taking on a magpie, so I suppose it is possible...the feathers were on the ground within a wooded area, and we did see a few buzzards circling about on ocassion. There were more feathers than this, but it was very windy and they'd been blown about... looks like they'd been there a few days. Jay Feathers BoP by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

A female Sparrowhawk most certainly would but this looks like the work of a fox, note broken feather shafts as opposed to when plucked out by a raptor.

Thanks, Alan- that hadn't occurred to me. Although it should have, because I saw this one morning when I got out with the camera trying to catch a glimpse of the owl... Fox near Campsite by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr
