This caterpillar was crossing the path in a dangerous manner (to itself) nearby. It was very big. My guess is a large moth. Attachment Deleted

Hi Nice pictures. A quick look through a couple of books and I think the caterpillar is that of a Small Eggar moth but am quite happy to be proved wrong by one of the more learned members.

Hi Liz Your moth is a Red-barred Tortrix (Ditula angustiorana). As Rassman says, the caterpillar is a Small Eggar (Eriogaster lanestris). Regards Kim
